The Pharisees approached and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him.
He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?”
They replied, “Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.”
He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined to his wife), and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”
In the house the disciples again questioned him about this.
– New American Bible, Mark 10:2-12
Through its California affiliate, the National Organization for Marriage emerged as the single largest donor to Prop 8 in California. The National Organization for Marriage’s mission is “protecting marriage and the faith communities that sustain it.”
As I walk down the street, often people ask me, “John, how can I avoid the hell-fire and torment of eternal damnation?” When it comes to marriage the answer is simple: Never get divorced. Ever.
Jesus says getting divorced is a sin:
9 Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this.
11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.
12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.
Interestingly, Jesus never once even mentioned homosexuals or homosexual behavior. I assume this was some sort of clerical oversight that will be rectified during the end of days as described in the Book of Revelation. Perhaps during Satan’s 1,000 year reign. I’ll get back to you on that one.
In 2008, California passed Proposition 8, amending California’s state constitution to ban divorce. Proponents of Proposition 8 such as the Mormon Church and the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) indicated they were attempting to preserve traditional marriage.
Earlier this year I came across a pseudo-humorous group on Facebook – the 2010 Marriage Protection Act. The idea behind it was that if we really want to preserve traditional marriage, we need to ban divorce. Their website points out that in the four Gospels of the Bible, Jesus does not once refer to homosexuality, but he does speak out directly against divorce. They are in the process of collecting signatures to get a a ballot initiative to make divorce illegal in California. The organization is the creation of John Marcotte. The website is quite hysterical in its satire . After all, if same-sex marriage is a threat to traditional marriage, then surely divorce is an even greater threat.
I’ve got little to add to this except to emphasize my admiration for this. Even if he gets enough signatures, the initiative would almost surely fail to pass – after all, most people probably want the option to divorce. But like all good satire, it is making a point about a serious topic. Perhaps it will make people realize how dangerous it is to subject rights like marriage to this whim of voters.
A little googling will discover this initiative has been getting a decent amount of coverage at various news sites. There’s also some amusing public service announcements they’ve put up on YouTube:
